Why Mkoma Bay?….and why not!

In addition to its very special location and botanical gardens, Mkoma Bay is often high-lighted by travellers for its gastronomical quality kitchen and friendly local, yet highly professional, staff. Despite the wide range of attractive activities in the surrounding area, most guests tend to prefer to benefit from the special atmosphere at the lodge and choose to relax and enjoy. As such, it is the perfect add-on to a holiday involving daily changes of hotels and hours spend on the road in the safari circuit in Northern and Central Tanzania. For more, check www.mkomabay.com

There are however a number of things which could cause disappointment and we want to make sure we help manage expectations:

  • There is no Air Conditioning - Our tented bungalows have continuous mosquito fibre-netting as windows on three sides of the bedroom and A/C would not make sense which is why we installed ceiling fans. Temperatures at night are tolerable for most of the year, but people who are sensitive to heat at night may choose to avoid December and January.

  • Our Internet/WiFi (by satellite) is slow and generally only useful for e-mails, text messages, FaceBook and the odd picture, but video, Skype, FaceTime and streaming is usually not a pleasant experience.

  • Due to the size of the garden and the lay of the land, Mkoma Bay is not as wheelchair friendly as we would like. Distance from the main restaurant to the pool and beach is about 100-120 meters and most of the tents (on stilts) have a few steps from the garden to the veranda.

Weather

The weather in Pangani is generally fantastic all year round. In addition, at Mkoma Bay we benefit from an almost constant sea-breeze to cool things down a bit. Day-time temperatures vary from around 26 C in July-August to 32 C in December-January…so not much of a change. There tends, however, to be more wind from March through October (from the south) than from November through February (from north-east) so December and January definitely feel warmer than the rest of the year. Being within a few hundred kilometres from Equator, the sun tends to get up around 6 AM and sets at around 6 PM all year round (+/- 30 minutes tops).

Staff

Mkoma Bay potentially accommodates up to 30 people but rarely has more than 10-12 guests, and is staffed by 20 local and well-trained people. The service staff all speak English and are often high-lighted in on-line reviews for their helpfulness and extreme friendliness. Nic, who took over as owner/manager in 2015 is on-site full-time and actively involved with customer care as an integral part of the team. He speaks English, French and German in addition to his native Danish.

Groups and Workshops

Our large dining space is perfect for conferences or retreats holding up to 50 people (although we cannot accommodate more than 28 people over-night assuming all sharing double rooms). We have also successfully accommodated yoga and wellness retreats and can help finding a facilitator if you have an interested group of 10-14 people. Get in touch with us to find out more information and let us know the requirements of your group and we will do our best to accommodate you!

Getting Here

Mkoma Bay Tented Lodge’s unique secluded character is secured by its off-the-beaten-track location, which means getting here can be a bit of a challenge. Two airstrips, Tanga and Mashado, are within one and half hour’s drive respectively. The lodge organises pick-up and transfers.

By car, Pangani is accessible from Tanga, Dar es Salaam and Arusha/Moshi and there are public bus services as well. Finally, speed-boat transfers can be organised from northern Zanzibar.

Managing Expectations

We acknowledge that the travel market is increasingly complex and sophisticated and that making the right choice despite all the additional available information is not necessarily easier.

Our website is obviously designed to help you appreciate what we have to offer. This section, however, is designed to help ensure you do not get nasty surprises by listing what we can not offer.

Weather and Climate

Having lived here now for three years, I would start by warning against  planning a trip to this part of Africa based on perceived ideas about rain-seasons etc. Whether its climate change or El-Ninjo, it is changing.

The simple fact is that its almost always sunny for most of the day; between 26c and 32c all year round; and it almost only rains at night
