Why Mkoma Bay?.....and Why Not?

In addition to its very special location and botanical gardens, Mkoma Bay is often high-lighted by travellers for its gastronomical quality kitchen and friendly local, yet highly professional, staff. Despite the wide range of attractive activities in the surrounding area, most guests tend to prefer to benefit from the special atmosphere at the lodge and choose to relax and enjoy. As such, it is the perfect add-on to a holiday involving daily changes of hotels and hours spend on the road in the safari circuit in Northern and Central Tanzania. 

 

There are however a number of things which could cause disappointment and we want to make sure we help manage expectations:

  • There is no Air Conditioning - Our tented bungalows have continuous mosquito fibre-netting as windows on three sides of the bedroom and A/C would not make sense which is why we installed ceiling fans. Temperatures at night are tolerable for most of the year, but people who are sensitive to heat at night may choose to avoid December and January.
     

  • Our Internet/WiFi (by satellite) is slow and generally only useful for e-mails, text messages, FaceBook and the odd picture, but video, Skype, FaceTime and streaming is usually not a pleasant experience.

  •  

  • There is no Telephone in the guest rooms...nor anywhere else for that matter. There is also no Televisions.
     

  • Due to the size of the garden and the lay of the land, Mkoma Bay is not as wheelchair friendly as we would like. Distance from the main restaurant to the pool and beach is about 100-120 meters and most of the tents (on stilts) have a few steps from the garden to the veranda.
     

  • We are a small boutique type hotel and focus our staff's attention on serving guests who are already on-site...and awake. We do not have 24 hour service and our reception is open, subject to guest load, from 8 till 20. The manager, Nic, lives on-site and is happy and available to deal with unforeseen guest requests outside office hours. ​Our kitchen and service staff is on-site from 7 till 22, and bar staff stays till the last guests head to their tents...or Nic takes over.
