In addition to the on-site activities, the immediate area offers a couple of special marine treats.

Visible from Mkoma Bay, 10 km out at sea, Maziwe Island Marine Park is considered by many as one of the best snorkelling and diving locations off the coast of East Africa.

Maziwe Island still had a few trees in the early seventies but today, with nature’s natural evolution and maybe climate change, it is a sandbank. It is surrounded by its own circular coral reef inside the main coastal reef. The corals are exceptional in their colours and variety primarily due to the protection provided by its status as Marine Park.

You are likely to see the majority of small colourful fish species you would expect in any decent aquarium in addition to potentially blue-spotted stingrays, sea turtles, moray, squids and the odd dolphin on your way out there or back.

Diving is organised through PADI certified Kasa Divers (kasadivers@gmail.com) in neighbouring Ushongo. We organise the full-day (9 till 3) snorkelling trip with its own equipment, lunch and drinks, Marine Park tickets and a reliable boat with a two-man crew. You snorkel both before and after lunch under a shade-tent on the sandbank.
